Compacts and vanity cases were manufactured for a number of different purposes. One was as a marketing device for cosmetic products such as face powder, rouge, lip gloss etc and cases made for this purpose were branded with the name of the cosmetics company or the particular product line, or both. Later on, when compacts became more like fashion accessories, case makers themselves  branded their own compacts with their own names because the cases were being purchased for their attractiveness as containers rather than the products they contained. Anyway, owners were free to fill them with whatever products they liked because refills were readily available.
